Meet and Sponsor Our Donkeys

ABBY

Sponsor Abby! Abby arrived at PRS in the fall of 2020 with her daughter from a ‘rescue’ where they were not receiving the medical care they needed. Abby had foundered and her condition was so bad that our upon seeing her radiographs, our veterinarian was shocked she could stand. Since her rescue, Abby has been on a strict founder protocol as we work to slowly rotate the bones in her hoof back to a normal position.

ANGIE

Sponsor Angie! When Angie was a young foal, she injured one of her rear legs, dislocating the joint. Though her condition would have been extremely painful, she never received any medical care. By the time she was seized in a state cruelty case, her condition was no longer able to be corrected and she was left stunted with a bad hip and special needs that will likely cut her lifespan in half.

BENNY

Sponsor Benny! Benny came to PRS with severely neglected hooves and an infection in his coffin bone that would have been a death sentence. We took him to Tufts University for a lifesaving surgery where he stayed for six weeks of special care. Once back to PRS, his daily rehabilitative care took another year. These days, Benny is doing great. He is always the first to befriend any new donkey rescues.

BETTY

Sponsor Betty! Betty came to PRS along with her companion, Chelsea, in early winter of 2017 when their guardian could no longer give them the care they needed. Both came to us with neglected hooves needing corrective care. Nearly identical, this pair of friendly, wonderful donkeys quickly won us all over and are a special part of our rescued donkey family.

BO

Sponsor Bo! Bo came to PRS with his friend, Jed, when they needed a soft place to land back in the summer of 2017. Bo, who was called ‘Bones’ before he was rescued arrived really skinny and boney. We were grateful to be able to offer this pair a safe forever home. Bo has a funny disposition and can be a bit bossy, but he quickly made friends here, especially with Betty and Chelsea.

CHELSEA

Sponsor Chelsea! Chelsea came to PRS along with her companion, Betty, in early winter of 2017 when their guardian could no longer give them the care they needed. Both came to us with neglected hooves needing corrective care. Nearly identical, this pair of friendly, wonderful donkeys quickly won us all over and are a special part of our rescued donkey family.

CINDERELLA

Sponsor Cinderella! Cinderella found her way to Peace Ridge when her guardian put down her elderly horse companion and was going to have Cinderella put down too, even though she was at a fraction of her natural lifespan with no medical reason for euthanasia. We knew we couldn’t let that happen and agreed to take her in. She is now at a healthy weight but was so overweight that she was at a high risk for deadly complications.

DEBBIE

Sponsor Debbie! Debbie arrived from a ‘rescue’ where she and her mother, Abby, were not getting the care they needed. Oftentimes people underestimate the care that animals need and thinking ‘loving’ animals is enough to start a rescue. But not having the knowledge or resources to properly care for animals often results in people harming animals more than helping. Here, Debbie will never be without.

JACK

Sponsor Jack! Jack came to PRS with his best friend, Benny, when they could no longer get the care they needed. Jack is very friendly with our other donkeys and loves playing with his friend, Jed. The two are often seeing running and playing together. Jack can be more shy with new human visitors but has formed special friendships with some of his favorite people here.

LILY

Sponsor Lily! Lily arrived at PRS with her best friend and lifelong companion, Pepe. Many people don’t realize that well-cared for donkeys can live to be 50 years old and at only about 10 years old, their guardians could no longer care for them. While this special pair of miniature donkeys  get along well with our other rescued residents, they are inseparable and never more than a few steps from each other.

LUCAS

Sponsor Lucas! Lucas came to PRS along with his mother, Twilite, when their guardian could no longer care for them. We found this bonded mother/son pair in a dark, filthy barn, covered in lice. Our gentle giant, Lucas has the ‘mammoth ‘ gene and is the largest donkey here at the sanctuary. He has a really calm, friendly personality and gets along with everyone – donkey and human – here at the sanctuary.

PEPE

Sponsor Pepe! Pepe arrived at PRS with his best friend and lifelong companion, Lily. Many people don’t realize that well-cared for donkeys can live to be 50 years old and at only about 10 years old, their guardians could no longer care for them. While this special pair of miniature donkeys  get along well with our other rescued residents, they are inseparable and never more than a few steps from each other.

SHERMAN

Sponsor Sherman! Sherman came to PRS with his brother, Tucker, from a state cruelty seizure. We found the two trapped in a small, dark stall atop feet of accumulated waste. Severely neglected for many years, both brothers had ‘elf feet’ with hooves so long they were curling in loops and barely able to walk. Both needed intense, corrective hoof care but are doing better these days.

TUCKER

Sponsor Tucker! Tucker came to PRS with his brother, Sherman, from a state cruelty seizure. We found the two trapped in a small, dark stall atop feet of accumulated waste. Severely neglected for many years, both brothers had ‘elf feet’ with hooves so long they were curling in loops and barely able to walk. Both needed intense, corrective hoof care but are doing better these days.

TWILITE

Sponsor Twilite! Mama Twilite came to PRS along with her son, Lucas, when their guardian could no longer care for them. We found this bonded mother/son pair in a dark, filthy barn, covered in lice. Born in 1994, Mama Twilite is our oldest donkey resident. She came to us with untreated, chronic Lyme and Cushing’s. A friend to everyone, Twilite acts as a surrogate mother to our youngest, special needs donkeys, Angie.

ZINNIA

Sponsor Zinnia! When she was no longer, Zinnia found herself at an auction where donkeys and horses routinely find themselves being sent to slaughter. Sold to the highest bidder, Zinnia found herself at another place where she wasn’t getting the care needed. When we were send a photo of this skinny, filthy donkey with a tired and scared but sweet look in her eyes, we knew we needed save her.
